bessie

She was spotted on ebay and bought late one night in a frantic bidding war that was down to 9 seconds !
But that was it, she was mine after a trip to the lake district and a wad of cash was exchanged by a dude who thought I should of known better.

It was too to late my mind was made up and as I drove her home smiling from ear to ear thinking how people warned me against these things, I was already thinking of the fun we were going to have with the kids on holiday, in this old dirty diesel VW.

I've always had Vdubs before: Beetle,Scirocco mk1 mk2 golf and now this huge lump of German steel, I thought how hard could it be to look after this thing? Well as I started to learn more about the VWT25 I started to realise that actually they're pretty good and I could easily look after this thing on a budget and modifying it wasn't going to kill me.

So glad I didn't buy a bay or a split, after all I want to be able to actually use it and not worry about parking in town. I was lucky cus without realizing it I got a 5 speed gearbox mated to a KY 1.7 diesel thinking it will be really economical and bomb proof, which it was, however after driving back from our first trip to Cornwall in it, I couldn't help but feel something wasn't quite right.

The lack of power was woeful... I mean I know its a 2 ton van but seriously, we had 40 ton trucks overtaking us regularly and any slight gradient had to be well planned and prepared for by changing gears at critical moments! Honestly, I've never known a vehicle which was soooo slow before.

Talking to my wife in the cab with the engine revving at full beans was no fun either, we had to use hand signals the noise was so loud. After many hours researching alternative engines I soon fixed my gaze on the idea of fitting a golf GTI engine and as it turned out, with the setup I had this was an ideal swap. Tried and tested for many years in Germany and elsewhere old mk2 engines were just a bolt on job. Awesome.
